This tour is particularly well suited for those who prefer going downhill rather than uphill. Walk to the Hartkaiserbahn valley station and take the funicular, the quick and easy way to reach the Hartkaiser at 1,550 metres. On the summit you’ll meet Ellmi the frog and his magic world, where there’s so much to enjoy that you can easily spend half a day or even the whole day here.
The Rübezahlschnitzweg then takes you from the Hartkaiser mountain to the rustic Rübezahl-Alm.
The mountain hut is a popular destination all year-round and is well-known from numerous radio and television broadcasts.
Austria's longest sculpture hiking trail is about 3 km long and has 22 figures carved single-handedly by Gerhard Salvenmoser, the Rübezahl-Alm landlord, using a chainsaw. Perhaps you’ll be able to recognise the odd celebrity or two in the wooden sculptures.
For the easy-going family:
Take the Hartkaiserbahn gondola lift from the middle station back down into the valley.
For the active family:
The hiking trail goes from the Rübezahl-Alm on into the valley and takes a further hour.
What’s special:
Ellmi’s magical Zauberwelt by the Hartkaiser at 1,555m
