Description

The Kaiserschützen via ferrata (difficulty B/C and 1+) was built in 1987 under the direction of Josef Hangl, a military mountain guide, in memory of the victims of the First and Second World Wars. The climb is special mainly because of its length and the delightful scenery. To enjoy a change from the sections secured with steel ropes, there are sections which can be walked but demand surefootedness, a good head for heights and mountain climbing experience. If you’re making good time, you can also take a detour to the summits of the Kleine Halt and Gamshalt mountains.

Requirements: a good head for heights and surefootedness as well as very good physical condition and alpine experience are absolutely essential!
Climbing harness, via ferrata set & helmet required!
 
Setting out from Wochenbrunner Alm, this is an all-day tour that is only safe in reliably fair weather.

Alternatively, you can start the tour in the Kaisertal valley and complete it over the course of two days, spending the night in the Hans-Berger-Haus.

Information

  • From the Wochenbrunner Alm mountain hut, first follow trail 825 to the Gruttenhütte mountain hut. After a short break, continue upwards on trail 813 into the large ‘Hochgrubach’ gravel cirque towards the Ellmauer Halt. On the following ascent via the Gamsängsteig trail there’s a real danger of rock falls caused by mountaineers above. In the first section of the trail, cross the exposed ‘Gamsänger’ series of ledges – with the rock faces of the Kopftörlgrat ridge above. After the first part of the Jägerwandtreppe steps, head southwest to the red Rinnscharte and hike down trail 813 (partly secured by ropes) to the Oberer
    Scharlinger Boden until you reach a panel at the entrance to the Kaiserschützensteig trail (no. 820).
    Approach time: approx. 4-5 hours

  • Take the Gamsängsteig trail 813 to the red Rinnscharte and continue south to the Gruttenhütte mountain hut. Return to the Wochenbrunner Alm mountain hut via trail 825 towards the valley.

Arrival

  • The free hikers’ bus runs daily in summer between the Ellmau Dorf/Bauhof bus stop the trailhead of the hike to the Wochenbrunner Alm Alpine hut. Passengers can change to/from the KaiserJet and regular buses at the Ellmau Dorf/Bauhof bus stop.

  • If you’re coming on the B178 road from Wörgl or Kufstein, take the Ellmau exit and then the first exit at the roundabout. Go straight down the road until you reach the turn-off (green signs) towards Kaisergebirge/Wochenbrunn. Turn left here and immediately right again. Now follow the road, a toll road, till you reach the Wochenbrunner Alm car park.

    If you’re coming on the B178 from St. Johann, take the Ellmau exit and continue straight ahead until the Bauhof junction (green signposts towards Kaisergebirge/Wochenbrunn). Turn right here and immediately right again. Now follow the toll road till you reach the Wochenbrunner Alm car park.
